SEO Mistakes — 3 Reasons Why You Will Not Be on the First Page of Google
For any keyword or phrase, there are 10 non-paid spots on the first page of Google and competition for those spots is fierce. If you do not have an SEO (search engine optimization) strategy, you only have two chances of your website being in one (or more) of those top spots–slim and none.
Here are 3 reasons why you will not get on the first page:
- You have not put out the welcome mat to Google. You are virtually anonymous and make it difficult for Google’s spider robot to figure out what your site is all about and who you are. If you do not provide some sign posts, it is like going into a multi-story office building to find who the tenants are without a directory and without signs on the doors.
Instead, you need to provide keyword rich page/post titles and descriptions and a sitemap of the pages you want Google to index. In addition, add an About or Contact Us page to provide Google and your readers with a way to connect with you on a personal level even if you use a pen name. Your articles, blog posts or web pages should mention in the first paragraph at least the exact keyword phrase that describes the content on that page. Keep in mind that each blog post is a separate page even though your site may show several on the home or blog home page.
- You have little to offer. The days of one-sales-page websites being ranked is practically gone. Google wants to provide its customers with content-rich results that are not mere repeats of other websites. Affiliates particularly are vulnerable to this problem as are small businesses who merely put up a sales brochure for their website content.
Instead, add a blog to your website and post to it regularly with relevant topics for the keywords you want to rank for. The more often you post fresh content, the more often Google will visit your website for an update.
- You have no votes of confidence from others. If Google does not see references to your website on other websites (especially ones it deems to be important), it will think your site and content is not worthy of serving up to its customers.Instead, find high ranking sites to show a link back to your site. There are several ways to accomplish this task without begging webmasters to do it for you. First, Google loves content providers like You Tube, Ezinearticles and Press Release sites. You simply provide original content and put your website link in the description or resource box. Another way to get a “backlink” is to join in the conversation on high ranking blogs or forums. You will be allowed to add your website to your signature associated with any comments or postings as long as you are furthering the conversation and not merely spamming.
